Sixth Form

Life in the sixth form is hard work but with teachers who treat you like mature young adults. The sixth form mentors guide you through the university application, choice of subjects and a range of other challenges both great and small. There is no school uniform but the requirement to dress like young professional people.

The sixth form offers change, a wealth of new opportunities and a chance to prepare for the future.

Great stress is laid on continuity of education form the Nursery to the sixth form, and our syllabuses and schemes of work reflect this. Most sixth formers study four AS levels in year twelve, although a few study five. In year thirteen pupils will study three A levels and occasionally four. Work and progress is monitored by sixth form tutors. At A level there are more than twenty subjects to choose from.

In August 2008 the students of Battle Abbey achieved school record breaking A level results. 77% of all grades were at A and B with 11 out of our 32 candidates scoring three grade A's or better. Overall the sixth form recorded a 100% pass rate.

‘It all changes, it’s fun and very sociable. There is a great sense of community and we enjoy the sixth form area with its rooms for work and relaxation. Many of us become prefects. There are leadership training and bonding days, like they have in industry, on high rope courses for instance. Some of us become Peer Supporters and learn skills like conflict resolution and how to listen and observe body language. We get to plan our own social functions, including dinners, and to take part in specialised trips. Paris for Art Historians, Hong Kong, New York and Warsaw for Economists and those doing Business and IT. Sixth form History trips and a raft of theatre trips and other outings. Sport is more varied with a use of gym, pilates and yoga courses for instance, as well as the mainstream school sports. We are given much more responsibility for managing our own study time but there is always support to guide us if our resolution weakens.’

Peer Support

We know that many students prefer to go to another young person for help, and so a Peer Support system has been established.

Peer Supporters are Sixth Formers who have expressed a particular interest in looking after younger students in the school. Many of them are Stars and Bronzes (School prefects, or boarding prefects) and all have participated in a training programme where Peer Supporters learn skills like conflict resolution and how to listen and observe body language. This helps them become attentive listeners and skilled communicators.

A member of staff supervises the work they do with younger students, but nonetheless it is confidential. You can therefore go to Supporters with the knowledge that they are trusted students who have your welfare and happiness very clear in mind.

Careers and UCAS

Choosing the right university and the right course is vital. The school provides skilled help to steer students toward the right decisions. This starts with a visit to a university ‘fair’, followed by meetings and teaching sessions. Guidance is given every step of the way.

There is a school careers counsellor as well as the services of the Sussex Careers Service to support the work and advice of the home team.

Almost all of our Upper Sixth Formers go off to University or Art College. Careful career and university guidance steers them in the right direction. Suitable selection of the most appropriate courses is achieved following detailed analytical testing and consultation.

The school’s Careers Counsellor works closely with each individual to ensure they are given the best advice and guidance possible.
